V is for VLA

Now you may wonder for what VLA stands. It's a good thing that you are here for Jenny Matlock's Alphabe-Thursday then! VLA means Very Large Array. It's a radio astronomy observatory in New Mexico, USA. If you watched the movie Contact with Jodie Foster, you have seen parts of the VLA. Anyway, I visited the VLA in the late 1990s -- the size and quantity of the antennas is impressing.

You feel somewhat small standing in front of those constructions. My mom took the photo below of me offering sacrifice to the God of Technology -- or so it seems. Actually, I filmed the huge dish.

  1. I remember the first time I saw the VLA....from far away, it looks like a space age mushroom farm. The closer we got the smaller I felt. And yes, those things are huge. Nice pictures. Howdie girl.

  7. Cool! One of my daughters friends just graduated with a degree in astro-physics. This is probably the sort of thing he would be interested in.
