Fat Tuesday in downtown Munich

First of all, let me say that this is not a typical Pink Saturday (as always organized by Beverly) post, but rather a post about Fat Tuesday in my hometown with a couple of pink accents now and then. Do you want to have a glimpse at carnival in downtown Munich? Join me on a stroll around town.

Here you see the crowd around a stage on Karlsplatz (Charles' Square). The blue and white flag on the left side is the Bavarian flag. Black, red and gold are the colors of the German flag.

On stage, the carnival prince and princess danced. I managed to get a close-up of the princess.

A view of the Marienplatz (Mary's Square). Do you see the large pink flag on the right? Those flags are put up during carnival. The building is the New Town Hall with its famous carillon.

A close-up of the Mariensäule (Marian Column).

Now come along to the Viktualienmarkt, a food market not far from the Marienplatz. On Fat Tuesday, a couple of women working on the market always perform a special dance. Hundreds of people came to see the women's dance.

The crowd was so thick that I didn't get close enough to take photos of the women's dance, but you can watch the dance here. One of the ladies wears a pink costume!

Part of the fun was seeing all the great costumes. Four bears -- one in pink!

Alice in Wonderland is always inspiring. Here you see the Mad Hatter and the Caterpillar.

Some clowns.

Bees with balloon antennas.

A group of delightful cavewomen.

You wouldn't believe how many Jacks I saw -- male and female Jacks, old and young ones.

A sweet little princess in pink!

Coke can girl. The costume was perfect for walking in a crowd, as it guaranteed a minimum of personal space.

Three witches with colorful capes including the color pink.

A blue man.

Dwarfs.

A lovely Mother Earth -- or maybe she was a tree spirit.

Oh, this row of penguins was a riot! They marched in a line through the pedestrian zone.

Father and son dressed up as clowns.

A group of bunnies.

A Hippie couple.

There was music everywhere -- even some great percussion bands.

The colorful decorations were a visual feast. This clown hung at the Karlstor (Charles' Gate).

I love all those vivid colors -- especially the pink!

An Easter decoration I discovered in the window of a flower shop.

Here's yours truly.

After a short while, I had a lot of confetti in my hair.

After walking around town for quite some time, I had lunch at a Thai restaurant which is situated in an underground passage beneath Karlsplatz (Charles' Square).

Yummy cashew nut chicken with vegetables and rice.

There was a lot of delicious food for sale all over town including fish on a stick.

Something typical for carnival are Krapfen filled with marmalade (cruller).

Here's a fancy version of a Krapfen.

I hope you enjoyed our stroll through Munich on Fat Tuesday.

Happy Pink Saturday!
