Have you ever put a Gummibärchen (gummi bear or gummy bear) into a jar of water for a couple of hours? At first it just lies there.

Then air bubbles are starting to cover it -- and it slowly but steadily grows.

Finally, you end up with a gummi bear at least twice its original size.

Why? Here's the answer: "The gummy bears absorb the water and the gelatin acts like a sponge, holding it in." Try it out -- it's fun!
